A former US ambassador has branded George Bush's planned war on Iraq the "mother of all follies".

Jack Binns accused the President of driving US foreign policy in a damaging direction.

He also predicted strikes against Saddam Hussein would provoke a biological, chemical or even nuclear response.

Mr Binns, President Carter's ambassador to Honduras said: "We are on the brink of what would be the mother of all follies - our intention to dispose of Saddam by military force.

"Bush's desire to oust Saddam is driving our foreign policy in damaging directions.

"There is no doubt he is accumulating weapons of mass destruction, but our friends and allies in the war on terrorism are telling us to go slow.

"They say we must pursue other means to contain the Iraqi regime.

"Why should we heed this advice? First, because action against Iraq is certain to trigger Saddam's use of weapons of mass destruction.

"Many believe he could launch missiles against Israel.

"That would almost certainly trigger a nuclear response."

Veteran Labour MP Tam Dalyell described Mr Binns' comments as "enormously significant".

Republican foreign policy guru Brent Scowcroft said Bush could spark "Armageddon".

The retired general, who advised Nixon and Ford, said: "In 1991 Saddam sought to bring Israel into the conflict.

"This time he might succeed, provoking Israel to respond, perhaps with nuclear weapons, unleashing an Armageddon in the Middle East."
