Time to Get Over It
Commentary From N.O
9-11-2

Amid all the hype and hoopla about "9/11," do you somehow get the feeling that it's all nothing but a big charade, a hoax designed to exploit the deaths of 2,800 lives sacrificed a year ago?

As the media pant breathlessly in a lead-up to an anniversary orgasm, do you get the distinct impression that somebody out there might be trying to hijack our emotions?  For some ulterior purpose?  For the sake of some outside interest?

Missile batteries.  Rocket launchers.  Helicopter gunships. F-16 fighter jets.  Snipers.   All on conspicuous display in the nation's capital and across the country for this grand occasion.

Quite a performance.  But just about as transparent as that of a stripper in her last act at a burlesque show.

The whole performance, of course, is nothing more than an attempt to keep fear alive and psych the public up for a new war of aggression to supplement Dubya's ongoing, self-declared and open-ended "War Against Terrorism"-- a war for which others will be called to pay, a war which is now being used as a pretext to suppress consitutional rights and freedoms of those very ones.

As a prop for the whole show, we are now being collectively oriented toward "Ground Zero," as though it were some sort of sacred space, a new the center of the world.

But what is this "Ground Zero" that makes it so special? Is it a testament to the cultural glory and dignity of a great nation?  Is it a site epitomizing the racial health and vitality of America?  Is it a place where--prior to 9/11-- heroic idealism permeated the offices and corridors and productive labor was the order of the day?

Or is it merely a gaping, empty hole where two mighty towers dedicated to mammon and speculative, international finance capitalism stood as an emblem of a smug, decadent Old Order?  Hardly an appropriate symbol for those of us seeking a better world.

Yes, we too mourn the loss of innocent life, whether it be in New York or Oklahoma City--or Dresden, Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Baghdad, or wherever American bombs have targeted innocent civilians.   But since 9/11, America and those caught up in its self-fixation have been on the psychiatrist's couch far too long.

"Closure."  Yes, indeed, time to get over it.

Time to forget all the neuroses and psychoses.

Time to move on.

Time to get real.

Dear NO;

A good name for a post of this caliber. Listen up, friend, fellow citizen ... there is no one who would disagree with you, no one with half the intellect of a man with an IQ of 12.

But you protest way too much. You forget the mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, grandchildren and so many friends who died by a murderous hand. You avoid the three thousand people who died innocently by stroke and a small piece of sentence.

You write: "Amid all the hype and hoopla about "9/11," do you somehow get the feeling that it's all nothing but a big charade, a hoax designed to exploit the deaths of 2,800 lives sacrificed a year ago?"

I don't know how you were raised, but it seems to me you are as guilty as those whom you chide for making this, not the tragedy it was, but focusing on "your take on it."

Truth be known, thousands died. And there you are, bitching and moaning about those who take advantage of this tragedy in an orgasm of hype. Last time I looked, friend, that was the purview of the 'mainstream press.' The fact that this mainstream press is now doing what it's done (only more so) since yellow journalism, has not a damned thing to do with your conspiracy theory, your 'performance' theory et. al.

Rather it has to do with life lost. And on this day, I could care less about your theory or anyone else's. I'll worry about that tomorrow, as I did yesterday and the day before.

Today I shall remember those 300 plus fireman and policemen who gave their loves for the three thousand. I was there. This was a manmade nightmare. It will remain in my memory all my life. I witnessed first hand that graveyard at the World Trade Center, seeing people work tirelessly. Seeing body parts looking like small boulders covered with the dust of the concrete from the WTC. Buddy, for writing this today, you stink.

Write it tomorrw. I'll listen with respect then. Today .... today ...

Take your theories somewhere else, or take them on another day.

Not today. Today, you are anathema.
