- BOSTON (Reuters) - A 38-year-old
Massachusetts woman suffering from West Nile virus which authorities believe
she contracted while visiting Missouri, remained hospitalized on Tuesday,
state officials said.

- "Her symptoms, beginning with headache, progressing
to fever, chills, meningitis and encephalitis, reportedly began on August
2, shortly after her return to Massachusetts," the Massachusetts Department
of Public Health said in a statement.

- "To date this season, no confirmed human cases of
West Nile virus disease have been acquired in Massachusetts," the
statement said.

- A spokeswoman said the patient's condition was improving,
but declined to give details.

- Eight people have died of the disease this year, seven
in Louisiana and one in Mississippi, according to the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention .

- The CDC has confirmed 145 human cases in Alabama, Washington,
D.C., Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

- About 66 birds carrying the virus have been found dead
in Massachusetts while Missouri has reported West Nile virus in mosquitoes,
birds and horses.
