West Still Wants Assad Ousted,
Turkey Commitment Uncertain

By Stephen Lendman

Syria is Obama’s war, orchestrated by Hillary Clinton as secretary of state - its aim to transform the country into a US vassal state, pro-Western leadership replacing Assad.

Until he enters office and begins serving, Trump’s geopolitical agenda remains unknown. His campaign rhetoric was promising. Will he follow through responsibly as president or continue US imperial lawlessness?

With 10 days left in office, Obama continues waging war on humanity, including efforts to obstruct upcoming peace talks in Astana, Kazakhstan.

On Monday, Russian UN envoy Vitaly Churkin accused Western Security Council members (America, Britain and France without naming them) of continuing to foment conflict in Syria, saying:

“Work on Syria inside the Security Council has never been easy. Certain members of the council, which, let’s be frank, contributed to the start of the conflict in Syria and are still fueling it, are unable to give up their aims of overthrowing the current government…”

They “demoniz(e)” Assad instead of introducing constructive conflict resolution proposals. They obstruct Russia’s good faith efforts. Moscow remains hopeful for more cooperative relations with Washington once Trump succeeds Obama.

In December, Russia, Iran and Turkey formed a trilateral alliance for achieving cessation of hostilities and conflict resolution in Syria.

Russian and Iranian goals are clear, Turkey’s uncertain, given reports it continues aiding terrorist groups.

According to the Beirut-based Arabic online newspaper Al Akhbar, Ankara-backed terrorists intend launching large-scale attacks on government forces in western Aleppo, Idlib province and northern Hama - aimed at getting concessions from Russia and Syria in Astana.

Peace talks are scheduled to begin there on January 23. Does Turkey want them undermined while claiming otherwise? Are US, UK and French dirty hands involved?

Will Trump support diplomatic conflict resolution or shatter hopes for achieving it?

A previous article discussed Russia’s announced drawdown of forces in Syria, questioning the wisdom of the move in light of failure when it was tried last March.

According to Russian General Vyacheslav Bobov, the Admiral Kuznetsov carrier battle group en route home can be returned to positions off Syria’s coast immediately if needed.

It largely depends on Trump’s regional agenda after succeeding Obama.
