Trump Rejects Diplomatic Conflict Resolution in Syria |
By
Stephen Lendman |
Straightaway in office, he breached his positive campaign pledges, notably
to end the “mess” of endless US wars - he now wholeheartedly supports, making
him an unindicted war criminal. His preemptive April 7 aggression on Syria alone shows he rejects peaceful conflict resolution. On Friday, Assad’s political advisor Bouthaina Shaaban commented, saying his preemptive attack greatly undermined peace talks. Without America on board, successful conflict resolution is unattainable. Shaaban blasted anti-government elements involved in talks, asking “(w)hat kind of opposition can support strikes on their home country?” She referred to Saudi-cobbled together so-called High Negotiations Committee (HNC) members cheering Trump’s aggression, urging more. “If (it) continues, it will complicate our stance, the more so since terrorists and their patrons do not want a settlement,” she stressed. It’s well known that Syria eliminated its entire CW arsenal, confirmed by OPCW inspectors. Even if its military had these weapons, why would they use them against civilians it’s protecting. “That’s totally illogical,” said Shabban. There are no CWs at Shayrat airbase or anywhere else in the country under government control. No evidence suggests otherwise. US strategy “aims at creating a new state between Syria and Iraq, which means Syria will have to be divided,” she explained. “But there is a United Nations Security Council Resolution, confirming the need to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity based on single citizenship for all its residents regardless of their religion and ethnicity.” “Not all the Kurds seek autonomy. In many areas of Syria, various ethnic and religious groups live side by side. If they all demand independence, the country (would) collapse.” If US states demanded autonomy, entirely free from federal control, America as now constituted would cease to exist. On Saturday, peace prospects suffered another body blow when an alleged moderate rebel suicide attacker detonated a car bomb, striking a bus convoy, transporting civilians from two besieged villages near Aleppo. According to AMN News, 70 were killed, including 39 children, many more injured. On Saturday, buses departing from Al-Fou’aa and Kafraya stopped in Al-Rashideen where the attack occurred. No group officially declared responsibility so far. All anti-government forces are US-supported terrorists. No moderates exist, Saturday’s incident the latest example. Endless war continues with no prospect for resolution any time soon. Stephen Lendman lives in Chicago. He can be reached at lendmanstephen@sbcglobal.net.
