across this and while not current it talks about the Independent publishing
the story on GM bacteria/aspartame. In fact, here is the article:

The way it went public is I was talking to Marilyn Wolff of the
Independent. I said, "The UK is against genetic engineering,
why not help us with aspartame?" She said, "but can you prove
it?"
What happened is it was on the Miwon web site but no one realized
that was the formula for genetic engineering. When I pointed
it out on this ban genetic engineering list Miwon took it
down. However, I had printed it out and faxed it to Marilyn
Wolff. She kept her promise. She not only published it
on the front page but ABOVE one of the royal weddings. So a
good deal of the UK read it. The excuse was
"that's only in the US". Like I believe that.
So, for those who need the aspartame patent here it is. It makes me
think of a conversation I had with someone who called sick from the
Augusta, Ga. Aspartame Factory, now closed, over 25 years
ago. He told me all those working with aspartame were
sick like he was. I said, "Since you're making it, can you
tell me what its made from?" He replied, "I don't know lady,
all we have here is toxic waste!"
