Debunking US Claims About
Russia Accomplishing Nothing In Syria

By Stephen Lendman

Outgoing neocon US secretary of war Ashton Carter won’t be missed.

Unindicted for high crimes, he’s returning to civilian life unaccountable - along with a rogue’s gallery of other Obama officials, headed by the soon-to-become former president.

On Monday, Carter lied, saying Russia “ha(sn’t) done anything. They came in (and) said they were going to fight ILIS, and they said they were going to help in the civil war (sic) in Syria.”

“Russia hasn’t done either of those things. As a consequence…we’re fighting ISIL ourselves.”

Fact: Syria’s war isn’t civil. It’s US-initiated naked aggression against a sovereign independent country threatening no one.

Fact: America created and supports ISIS and other terrorist groups. Its aerial campaign targets vital infrastructure, government sites, and Syrian forces.

Fact: Russian operations against the terrorist scourge in Syria turned the tide of battle effectively.

Commenting on Carter’s Big Lies, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said “(y)esterday I listened to a speech by one of my foreign counterparts in a faraway country.”

“He said that Russia’s contribution to the struggle against terrorism in Syria and in the region was equal to zero. I might have subscribed to what he said in a sense only if a) that counterpart of mine had not picked the wrong country; and b) had been more accurate in his comments.”

The US-led “international coalition…has not only achieved nothing, but even turned things for the worst.”

Separately, Russia’s Army General Staff chief Gen. Valery Gerasimov explained Russia’s impressive achievements in Syria.

Since September 30, 2015, Russian warplanes flew over 19,000 sorties, destroying 174 ISIS oil facilities and scores of oil convoys. Over 71,000 strikes were conducted on terrorists’ positions.

Their training camps, munitions sites, command and control locations, various other facilities, and thousands of their fighters were eliminated.

According to Gerasimov, Russia’s aerial operations “helped both disrupt the system of ISIL illegal armed formations’ supply and deprive them of their basic source of revenues.”

With vital Russian help, Syrian ground and allied forces liberated 12,360 square km of Syrian territory and around 500 communities.

“(L)arge illegal armed formations were routed near Hama and Homs,” Gerasimov explained. “The province of Latakia has been freed from militants, the liberation of Damascus suburbs is nearing completion and the basic transport artery linking the capital with the country’s north has been unblocked.”

“The cities of Aleppo and Al-Karyatein that are of key significance have been liberated.”

Russia’s intervention prevented the Obama administration from ousting Assad and transforming Syria into another US imperial trophy. Humanity applauds the effort.
