NYT Hypocrisy On Iran

By Stephen Lendman

The Times operates as a Pentagon press agent, notoriously supporting all US wars of aggression.

It pretends they’re about humanitarian intervention, democracy building and protecting national security - false on all counts.

No nation threatened America since WW II - nor has Iran throughout its history, or any other country US forces attacked since 1945.

The Times: “The last thing the United States needs is another war in the Middle East. Yet a drumbeat of provocative words, outright threats and actions…is raising tensions that could lead to armed conflict with Iran.”

Fact: Times correspondents, columnists, editors and op-ed contributors falsely accuse Iran of state-sponsored terrorism, aggression, destabilizing the region, egregious human rights abuses, revanchist aims, and other hostile actions - suppressing hard truth’s about the region’s leading peace and stability champion.

The Times: “Iran…deserves…punishment and isolation.”

Fact: Iran sovereign independence deserves respect. Rogue US/Israeli policies are the problem, Tehran one of their many victims.

The Times: “…Iran and the United States…share some interests like fighting” ISIS.

Fact: Tehran forthrightly opposes ISIS and likeminded terrorist groups. America and Israel support the scourge they pretend to oppose.

The Times: “(T)he 2003 Iraq War (was) arguably America’s biggest strategic blunder in modern times.” It was attacked “even though (Saddam Hussein) had nothing to do with 9/11 and had no nuclear weapons…”

Fact: In the run-up to the war, The Times was its leading media proponent - featuring daily Pentagon press releases, masquerading as credible reports.

Fact: Without disgraceful Times support from, it would have been much harder for Bush/Cheney to justify unjustifiable aggression against a nation threatening no one.

The Times: A similar “stumble into war could happen again.”

Fact: It happens repeatedly with Times support - from North Korea in 1950 to current US wars of aggression.

Fact: If America attacks Iran, a real possibility under Trump, The Times will invent reasons to support it, the same way it backs all US aggressive actions, ignoring fundamental rule of law principles.

In a letter to Rex Tillerson, GOP neocon Senators Marco Rubio, Tom Cotton, David Perdue and Ted Cruz lied, saying Iran continues to wage “regional aggression, sponsor international terrorism, (illegally) develop ballistic missile technology, and oppress the Iranian people.”

The Times: “There’s truth in that…Most Americans are aware of Iran’s crimes against this country.”

Fact: The accusations are bald-faced lies. Tehran committed no crimes against America or any other nation. Washington does it repeatedly - the highest of high crimes against humanity.

On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said “American officials see the independent and sensible policies of Iran...vis-a-vis the global and regional developments as a threat to their meddlesome and profit-oriented policies.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that the real, serious threat to the regional security, stability and development is the US interference in the affairs of other countries, which is aimed at stoking instability and insecurity.”

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani vowed to respond appropriately to new US sanctions on the country.

On Tuesday, the Treasury Department imposed them illegally on 16 Iranian entities and individuals.

Secretary Mnuchin lied citing nonexistent Iranian “malign activity, including…state support of terrorism, ballistic missile program, and human rights abuses.”

Newly imposed sanctions violate the letter and spirit of the JCPOA nuclear deal. Rouhani correctly said “Americans (always) resort to duplicity in their actions.”

Will aggressive US war follow against another nation threatening no one?

Will Russia tolerate it? Will it get involved responsibly the way it intervened in Syria at the request of its government?

Is US/Moscow direct confrontation inevitable? Are things heading for eventual nuclear war?
