HRW Mocks Human Rights

By Stephen Lendman

HRW fronts for wealth, power and privilege. Well-known corporate foundations provide funding.

They include Ford, Rockefeller, Carnegie, Soros, and MacArthur among others. Money they supply is dirty.

Services rendered in return are required. Conflicts of interest are rife. Information provided is cooked to serve them.

Followers are deceived. Executive Director Kenneth Roth is a former federal prosecutor. Former HRW head Aryeh Neier hired him. He left to become president of Soros’ Open Society Institute.

Jose Miguel Vivanco is HRW’s America’s division head. Formerly he served as an attorney for the Organization of American States’ Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

He teaches at Georgetown University’s Law Center and Johns Hopkins’ School for Advanced International Studies. Students are advised to avoid him.

His support for human rights is pretense. Instead of siding with Venezuela’s struggle against US dark forces and the country’s fascist opposition wanting the government toppled, he urged putschists running Brazil to “speak out when one of (its) neighbors is violating human rights.”

Last summer, Washington orchestrated the impeachment and ouster of democratically elected President Dilma Rouseff. Brazilian fascists headed by Michel Temer usurped power.

Tyranny replaced democracy. Rouseff committed no crimes. Nothing justified her removal. Allegations against her were fabricated. Justice was denied, her fundamental human rights flagrantly violated.

Ignoring what happened, Vivanco said “it’s in Brazil’s best interest to join forces with the vast majority of democratic governments in the region, which are pushing to restore basic rights and the rule of law in Venezuela.”

Fact: Latin American democracy the way it should be is in short supply, Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia its leading proponents. Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and other right-wing regimes dominate the region.

Vivanco claiming it “would be irresponsible would be to stay silent in the face of the Maduro administration’s repression of dissent, suppression of elections, and Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis” shows he supports efforts by Washington and internal hardliners to replace democracy with fascist rule.

Separately, Washington failed to get enough regional support to condemn Venezuela’s governance.

At an Organization of American States (OAS) conference in Cancun, Mexico over how to address what’s ongoing in Venezuela, its Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez walked out, saying America hijacked the agenda.

She vowed her country would reject any hostile OAS resolution. Washington failed to get the required two-thirds support for adoption, condemning Venezuela unfairly, ignoring its struggle against street violence orchestrated by Washington.

Twenty countries voted in favor of the resolution, five against and eight abstentions, one vote needed short for adoption.

The OAS is largely US-controlled, most of its members backing its imperial agenda, deplorably on the wrong side of Venezuela’s struggle against dark forces internally and in Washington.
