EU Imposing More Illegal Sanctions On Syria

By Stephen Lendman

Sanctions on Syria since Obama’s naked aggression began hurt ordinary people most. Imposing them without Security Council authorization is illegal.

Syria is being raped and destroyed, though contesting valiantly with vital Russia, Iranian and Hezbollah help.

President Bashar al-Assad enjoys overwhelming support. Yet US-led Western propaganda viciously misportrays him as a brutal dictator. I support him and his liberating mission - to free his country from the scourge of US imperial lawlessness.

On Monday, EU countries imposed sanctions on 17 Syrian ministers and its central bank governor, a meaningless vengeful action, irresponsibly blaming Assad’s government for “violent repression against the civilian population in Syria.”

The move followed late October asset freezes and travel bans on 10 Syrians connected to Assad’s government. History will judge him well. Independent observers already have.

He’s responsibly defending his country against US-sponsored death squads, imported from scores of countries, committing ruthless atrocities, including use of chemical and other banned weapons against defenseless civilians.

In a statement, Brussels lied, claiming a “commit(ment) to finding a lasting solution to the conflict in Syria, as there is no military solution to the Syrian civil war.”

“The EU is determined to save lives and continues its intense humanitarian diplomatic effort to deliver aid to Aleppo and wherever needed, and to evacuate the wounded.”

Its Obama’s war, nothing civil about it. Allied with Washington, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Israel and other regional rogue states, Brussels supports terrorism ravaging Syria, massacring civilians, rejecting Russian diplomacy for peaceful conflict resolution - falsely blaming Assad and members of his government for US-led high crimes.

Since March 2011, EU sanctions were illegally imposed on 234 individuals and 69 Syrian enterprises, along with an oil and arms embargo, as well as various investment and trade restrictions.

Disagreement over whether to sanction Russia led to no action taken. Trump’s electoral triumph raises hopes for cooperating with Moscow in combating terrorism and resolving the conflict diplomatically.
