- I don't usually engage in fiction-writing, but shall
do so now as a desperate way of helping Troy Davis.

- I got the idea from a Georgia state senator who asks
every member of the execution team to refuse to follow immoral orders.
Hooray!!

- The following is a totally made-up story (by me), in
which the theme is correct but details are drawn from the blue sky.

- Dramatis Personae:
-
- Mrs Helen Rinn, CEO of Pink and Violet Health Services,
which contracts with Georgia's prisons
-
- Nurse Jenny who is supposed to prepare the I.V.
-
- Oscar, the guy in the cell next to Troy Davis (and therefore
who is himself a Death Row fellow),
-
- Warden Murphy, in charge of this prison,
-
- Doctor Death (can't think of another name, sorry).
-
- Act I
- Mrs Rinn on phone "Holy Friggin' Shit!! I just heard
that a state senator has called for a prison strike to prevent the execution
of Troy. What am I supposed to do?"
-
- One of the directors of her company on the other end
of the line: "Calm down. This is a
- perfectly legit execution; it's already been to the US
Supreme Court."
-
- Mrs Rinn; I know but a million people have signed a petition
saying there is too much doubt."
-
- Director "As far as I can see that is not our concern.
We have a business contract and are obliged to fulfill it."
-
- Mrs Rinn. "Somehow when you just said "business
contract," my stomach turned. I am going to tell our doctors not
to perform this job, and if you oust me as CEO everybody is going to hear
about it."

- Nurse Jenny calls her Mom "Mom, remember I told
you about the protests against the Troy thing? Well, they finally reached
the ear and heart of a state senator . He has asked us not to go ahead.
I am the poor jerk that is supposed to start the IV with the 'funny fluid'
in it.
- Oddly enough, I had a dream last night in which I put
some really funny fluid in the tube so that Troy woke up healthy and happy
20 minute later."

- Mom: "The dream reveals what you really want to
do. No need for my advice. You are a walking memorial of my advice to
you over the last 30 years,. Just do the right thing and don't be afraid."

- Act II
-
- Oscar: "Pssst, Troy. Wake up. I hear there is
movement afoot.
- Someone has organized a strike of prison staff. Isn't
that great?
-
- Troy: Well, I hope it is great for you and all the other
prisoners, but I can't even contemplate any more ups and downs. My sister
Martina is gravely ill. That's all I can think of at the moment."
-
- Oscar: Ok, just try to hold on. We will do the rest.
We're not stupid, even though we are treated as if we lacked a brain!"
-
- Act III
-
- Warden Murphy. Accompanies Dr Death to the room a couple
of hours before the event:
- "Doctor, My job is to tell you to execute the prisoner.
I have done it many times before. I am OK with God about it. But you
have to make up your own mind."
-
- Dr Death: Well I have done it four times before. I am
wondering if I will lose my licence to practice if I refuse. Nah, I guess
it is more possible that I would lose my licence if I am seen to commit
a murder."

- Warden: "Wouldn't it be worse than that? If you
committed a murder , you coud get a prison sentence."
-
- Dr Death: "How could the state prosecute me? It
is the very instructions of the state that I am carrying out."
-
- Warden: Trust me. I have seen some surprising twists
in politics.
- The current government could be thrown out on its ear
and the new one would take revenge on you."

- Dr Death: This whole thing is not worth it to me. My
wife was worried last night that somebody would slash our tires. I am
going to go home now with 'a bad back' and call in sick.'

- Act IV

- Oscar calls out as loud as he can "Hey Guys, the
nurse and the doctor have chickened out!"
-
- Tell anybody you can. It'll be too hard for the state
to overcome that message!!!!
