- 'Memorial Day,' supposedly the day we remember those
in uniform who died in defense of the nation. It is time we began to deconstruct
those deaths, in order to determine just what it was that so many millions
of people have died 'for' in the sixty-one years since America's military
has been attempting to hide itself, behind the deceptive title of The US
Department of Defense.
-
- From 1789 to 1947 the United States had an actual War
Department: until September 18, 1947 when the National Security Act of
that year established The US Department of Defense. However the name change
was only cosmetic and virtually meaningless in terms of the levels of US
aggressions around the world. (1)
-
- When we supposedly pause tomorrow to remember the nation's
dead from all the wars, this might also be a time to reflect on why this
nation uses so much force in its international diplomacy, as if there is
no other way to run US foreign policy, except from the smoking barrels
of our own and now our privatized military- contractors weapons as well.
-
- Civilized nations long ago have established that 'wars
do not solve conflicts, wars only create more conflict.' To that maxim,
the literal history of the USA has added "War is the most direct path
to power and wealth." While this is apparently true; how did it happen
that these outlawed private actions became the job of the US military.
How could this nation tolerate the creation of these illegal pathways to
privatized power and wealth, being blazed by US combat troops? It was simple
once America allowed all the lines to become blurred between government
and private enterprise, especially in the business of making war for greed
and profit; and completely aside from the national best-interests of this
nation. The end result of these "policies" comes down to what
Marine- General Smedley Butler discovered back in the dusts of history:
Namely that privatized power corrupts absolutely!
-
- "I spent 33 years...being a high-class muscle man
for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer
for capitalism....
-
- "I helped purify Nicaragua for the international
banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I helped make Mexico and
especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1916. I brought light
to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. I helped
make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City [Bank] boys to
collect revenue in. I helped in the rape of half a dozen Central American
republics for the benefit of Wall Street....
-
- "In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard
Oil went its way unmolested....I had...a swell racket. I was rewarded with
honors, medals, promotions....I might have given Al Capone a few hints.
The best he could do was to operate a racket in three cities. The Marines
operated on three continents..." (2)
-
- However since this part of history was never part of
"American History" most Americans have no knowledge of this man
or of what his experiences should have taught all of us. Perhaps that's
part of why the US is so lacking in any solutions today, to any problem
that does not end in war! Part of that answer can be found in the list
of charges pending under the Articles of Impeachment for George W. Bush
the dictator: (3)
-
- Now sixty years later, the world is still bleeding from
the open wound in Palestine, created by the attempted creation of Israel,
by a corrupt US president. The war-making aggression against the Palestinians
began with Israel's use of US tactics as practiced against the native populations
here, tactics that we used to 'clear' this country of its original inhabitants.
Now the United States is using these same genocidal tactics against those
still resisting our current hostile takeover attempts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
All because the lessons of history were never learned or understood by
the Americans in whose name these atrocities are still being committed.(4)
-
- The men and women who have died carrying out the orders
of our various commanders-in-chief, have definitely died: Only the reason
for their deaths remains unclear. Shrouded in secrecy, denied their public
due as fallen members of the military, and denied also their right to adequate
compensation for their loss of limbs and sanity, as well as the benefit
due them for the risks they assumed-not for the defense of the US Constitution,
but for those that directly benefit from their injury or death-the multi-national
bankers and their corporations! (5)
-
- This complete corruption of the once-bright-line between
the US military and the privatized military services, including contractors
must be re-established: just as the entire organization of this government's
priorities must be dragged out of the shadows and examined in the clear
light of public discussion, congressional oversight, and Impeachment proceedings
wherever these 'new' investigations might lead. Otherwise this National
Day of Remembrance will continue to be nothing but another fraud, another
shopping day without a point, in a nation that is far too proud of not
having a national memory. . .(6)
