- A disease called idiopathic hemorrhagic
pneumonia (IHP), of as yet unknown etiology, has caused the deaths of
7 persons in the state of Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil.
The State Department of Health is investigating the etiology of the disease,
which affects the lungs, but they haven't yet determined whether it is
viral or bacterial and how contagion occurs.
-
- The most common symptoms in patients
with IHP are respiratory distress, bleeding of the airways and fever.
Of 9 suspect patients in 9 different cities of the state, 6 children and
a 5-months-pregnant woman, aged 32, have died. Two children are in critical
condition.
