- The US administration, undergoing a military
reorganization worldwide, is planning to open new bases in Bulgaria in
the frame of reconstructing its military presence in Europe.
-
- US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice,
in the Bulgarian capital Sofia for a North Atlantic Treaty Organization
(NATO) foreign ministers unofficial meeting, signed on Friday an agreement
enabling the US army to use three military bases in Bulgaria.
-
- Rice said the consensus will accelerate
dual relations considerably; "We've signed a historical agreement."
-
- According to the 10-year agreement, 2,500
US soldiers will be deployed in Bulgaria.
-
- The US Army will deploy its troops and
aircrafts at the Bezmer airbase and Novo Selo base near the Bulgarian-Turkish
border, as well as at Graf Ignat-Yevo in the central part of the country.
-
- The agreement also specifies the use
of some military depots in the vicinity of Aydost in the Burgaz region
for the US army; however, the United States cannot deploy nuclear weapons
from these three bases.
-
- If the Bulgarian Parliament adopts the
agreement, US troops will be able to settle in the bases as of next year.
-
- The Washington administration can use
these bases to attack third party third countries without the permission
of the Bulgarian government.
-
- The US, choosing to use smaller bases
instead of the previous large ones, will be able to use these for instant
access to the Middle East and points beyond.
