- Experts have perfected an anti-speeding device - using
satellites. --And they are urging the Government introduce it within five
years.
-
- It uses the GPS satellite navigation system to pinpoint
your car's position.
-
- A computer in the car knows where it is and what the
speed limit is for that road.
-
- Electronics then override your car's accelerator, its
brakes and your car's fuel supply to stop you putting your foot down.
-
- Experts at Leeds University Institute for Transport Studies
have tried out the system on roads in West Yorks. The Department of the
Environment was so impressed that it ordered a bigger trial backed by the
Motor Industry Research Association.
-
- The Leeds team estimate it should cost just a few hundred
pounds.
-
- Dr Oliver Carston said: "The argument is overwhelmingly
convincing on safety grounds."
