- The list of US Congressmen set forth below are all members
who have been enticed in some way to vote for one of the most destructive
resolutions ever to emerge from the United States Congress. Friends of
Israel will stop at nothing to make it look as if the people of America
are all in favor of building the wall that now is designed to separate
Israel and Palestine.
-
- More than that, this wall is designed to stake out large
pieces of land around settlements in the West Bank, to take the homes,
the farms, the small possessions of people who have lived in these places
for many generations. By proposing this resolution, these members of Congress
and any others who join them in this travesty are about to say that none
of the three million people of Palestine have any rights, dignity, or even
claim to the spaces they and their families have lived in all their lives.
They are about to do this for political party gains in the United States.
-
- This resolution is about to give a seal of US approval,
on behalf of the people of our country, to the Israelis to go ahead and
take anything they want, destroy villages, bulldoze ancient olive groves,
push aside thousands of innocent people, brutalize women and children,
and prolong the conflict in the Middle East for generations yet to come.
It is about to give the Israeli Defense Force a license to commit unlimited
acts of terrorism in the name of preventing terrorism.
-
- We cannot stop the hard right extremists of Israel from
doing what they intend to do, which is to harry the Palestinian people
until they die or leave. But we can tell the Members of the Congress of
the United States that they have no right to do this in our name. None
of us voted for any member of Congress on this list to do the dastardly
kind of thing this resolution requires, which is approve the wilful dehumanizing
of the people of Palestine by Israeli extremists.
-
- To do this is not only to tell the people of Palestine
that we, the American people do not care what happens to them. It will
also tell the people of Iraq that our occupying forces, already tainted
by the tortures recorded at Abu Ghraib, have a license to do what they
will. This resolution will destroy any chance the United States might
have had after Abu Ghraib to persuade the people of that region that we
have their interests at heart. We can forget exporting democracy. We
can forget promoting political and social reform in the Middle East. We
can stay there, surrounded by armed guards and defended by the best forces
we have. But we will never again be welcome.
-
- However we do it, we must all tell our Congressmen and
Senators not to do this. To do less is to admit that our country has failed
and no longer deserves the mantle of world leadership.
-
- Ask Your Congressman Not to Support Wall Resolution
-
- Recent reports from Israel indicate that the Israelis
are resuming construction on the expensive and illegal wall they envisage
will separate themselves from the Palestinians.? The new construction is
now aiming for the Jewish settlement of Ariel, deep in Palestinian territory,
and if followed will annex more Palestinian land, groves, water resources,
and villages.? The human costs are incalculable.
-
- Earlier this year the United Nations Security Council
asked the International Court of Justice to listen to arguments about the
legality of the wall, and shortly thereafter, Israel's friends in Congress
circulated a resolution supporting the separation wall and condemning the
UN's decision (R.Con.Res.371). As of today, 162 members of Congress have
signed on to the resolution, which is still with the House International
Relations Committee.? They must be asked to reconsider their decision.
-
- Following the lead of members of our Connecticut chapter,
we urge all CNI members and friends to contact their representative and
urge them to withdraw support of the House resolution ? or to commend them
for not supporting it.? A list of the representatives supporting the resolution
is below.
-
- The contact numbers for your congressmen are available
through www.congress.org.
-
- In contacting your representative, make the following
points:
-
- 1. The path of the wall rarely follows the internationally
recognized border between Israel and Palestine, and it annexes agricultural
land, groves, and villages belonging to the Palestinians.? It cuts apart
whole communities in east Jerusalem.
-
- 2. According to the Geneva Conventions, an occupying
power may not seize land of the occupied peoples nor may it punish them
collectively for acts individuals may have committed.
-
- 3. The international community has already condemned
the wall, as voted upon by the United Nations (U.N. General Assembly Resolution
ES10/13)
-
- Israel has the right to build whatever it wishes on its
own land, but not on land it does not own.
