Startling new evidence that a UFO landed in the British countryside can be unveiled today.

The findings finally confirm a famous News of the World report in October 1983 when we told how US airmen stationed in Suffolk encountered a strange craft in woods at the edge of their base.

We had clinched our Page One exclusive only when we obtained an official US military report of the sighting.

This was after THREE YEARS of denials by the Ministry of Defence.

Even then the MoD, the police and the American government tried to play down the incident.

But a new book by eminent author Georgina Bruni, pictured above, contains a crucial 20-minute transcript of tape recordings made by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt at the moment he witnessed the close encounter.

The base was under the overall command of General Gordon Williams, but it was Halt who led the search party after strange lights were spotted.

He is the key witness to the ET landing on December 27, 1980.

Deathly

On that tape Halt is heard speaking into a recorder as he moves through the undergrowth, providing almost a running commentary.

There are also snatches of conversation with three other airmen, Lieutenant Bruce Englund, Sergeant Munroe Nevilles and Master Sergeant Robert Ball.

Halt: We just bumped into the first light that we,ve seen. We,re about 150 to 200 yards from the site. Everything else is just deathly calm. There,s no doubt about it, there,s some kind of flashing red light ahead.

Nevilles: Yeah, it,s yellow.

Halt: I saw a yellow tinge in it too. Weird. It appears to be making a little bit this way. It,s brighter than it,s been. It,s coming this way...it,s definitely coming this way.

Ball: Pieces are shooting off.

Halt: Pieces are shooting off.

Ball (indicating the direction): ...at about 11 o,clock.

Halt: This is weird.

Ball: Look to the left!

Nevilles: There,s two lights. One light to the right and one light to the left.

Halt: Keep your flashlight off. There,s something very, very strange. Check the headset out, see if it gets any stronger... (he is referring to the Geiger counter Neville is carrying to check for radiation.)

Nevilles: OK, I have an indication, a vague reading.

Halt: OK...pieces are falling off it again.

Ball: It just moved to the right...went off to the right.

Halt: Strange. Ahhh. One again left. Let,s approach the edge of the woods at that point. Can we do without lights? Let,s do it carefully, come on.

(He continues speaking directly into the tape recorder):

OK, we,re looking at the thing, we,re probably about two to three hundred yards away. It looks like an eye winking at you, it,s still moving from side to side and when we put the starscope (night vision lens) on it, it,s sorta a hollow centre, right, a dark centre, it,s...

Englund: Like a pupil.

Halt: It,s like the pupil of an eye looking at you, winking...and the flash is so bright to the starscope, that, er, it almost burns your eye.

After a break in the tape Halt goes on to talk about spotting "up to five lights with a similar shape.

There is a further pause then the recording resumes as the group see further unidentified objects in the night sky.

Halt: 3.05. We see strange, er, strobe-like flashes to the, er...almost sporadic, but there,s definitely something there, some kind of phenomena. 3.05: at about, er, 10 degrees horizon, er, directly north, we got two strange objects, er, half-moon shape dancing about with coloured lights.

Eclipse

But, er, it has to be about five to 10 miles out, maybe less. The half-moons have now turned into full circles as though there was an eclipse or something there for a minute or two.

After yet another break in the tape Halt and his team talk about the objects moving away from them.

Author Georgina Bruni tracked down more than 100 people for her book on the Rendlesham Forest UFO mystery which she has called "You Can,t Tell The People.

The title is a remark made by Margaret Thatcher when Georgina met her at a social function and managed to ask her about UFOs and the landings in Suffolk.

It left Georgina in no doubt that Thatcher knew what she was talking about but that she didn,t feel the public should be allowed to know.

"If she thought the conversation was verging on the wacky, she wouldn,t have stayed interested as long as she did, says Georgina,

"She,d have terminated the conversation with something like You,ve been watching too many X-files episodes, my dear,.

The author told the News of the World: "When I spoke to Colonel Halt he admitted he saw lights, but denied the landing.

"But I spoke to a former sergeant, Adrian Bustinza, who was in his patrol and swears on his life that there was a landed UFO.

"Halt at first said Bustinza wasn,t with him, but I later came across a tape with Bustinza,s voice on it.,,

Mr Bustinza has since retired from the Air Force and is now a supervisor with the US State Department supervising criminal investigations.

During interviews with Georgina, he told her: "When I arrived it was going in and out through the trees and at one stage it was hovering.

"Then it went over to a clearing at the edge of the forest. By the time we got to the clearing it had already landed.

"When this thing landed Halt was already there. I didn,t see it land. I saw it take off. It kind of hovered at first and then took off.

"At that time I thought we were dealing with an extra-terrestrial visitation. I can,t say I saw beings, but I saw outlines of something.

Landing

As well as Halt,s audio tapes, Georgina,s research has unearthed new pictures taken the morning after the incident.

"They were taken by a US airman, Ray Guylas, when he went out to investigate the landing, to take measurements and radiation readings, she said. "There were three landing marks.

Georgina also discovered the covering letter that a Squadron Leader called Donald Morland attached to a memo of Lt Col Halt,s detailing the lights,.

"The interesting thing about it is that it,s titled UFO, she said. "Now why did he call it that if it was anything else?
