Halt Elephant Captures For US Zoos!
Elephant Cruelty Must Not Be Tolerated

8-19-03

Dear America,

Please help me to stop this atrocity. Email the zoo authorities below politely demanding greater heart and intellect regarding the tragic decision to capture, import and imprison wild, socially bonded African elephants for U.S. zoos, as well as to "DISCARD" older captive, socially bonded elephants that have lived at the zoos for over 20 years. Following is a copy of my email to the zoo officials explaining everything, and providing web links to more information. Also contact the Swaziland officials at the end of this message who also have the power to stop this inhuman cruelty.

Elephants feel and think and love just like us. They're already endangered, and these sickening acts need to stop. Thank you to all feeling individuals who take action with me against this animal cruelty.

Gentlemen,

I implore you to reconsider the ramifications of accepting captured wild elephants for U.S. zoos, as well as DISCARDING older elephants you already have. Please think about how bereft of heart these actions are. Elephants are as socially ordered as humans, and I believe just as intelligent. They save each others lives, they mourn their dead, they even help OTHER ANIMAL SPECIES when they see them in trouble! Does any of that sound lacking in conscious thought and feelings for others? You don't see many other animals with these capacities.

Therefore it's not only animal cruelty by NORMAL standards to imprison wild elephants bonded to their heards, or to DISCARD bonded elephants already "used to" captivity... it is cruelty on an even higher scale because of their exceptional capacity for human-like emotions and consciousness. It is your solemn duty to care for your captive elephants for their entire lives, or to ensure that they're well-cared for elsewhere and KEPT TOGETHER with their bonded friends and kin. Similarly it should be AGAINST your very honor to break wild, bonded elephants away from the free life they've always known, ripping them from their families and social support. You will only end up breaking their hearts, causing them deep depression and emotuional anguish.

Do you REALLY want this act to be your legacy? Do you have children? Would they approve of this act if they understood the emotional impacts on these beautiful creatures?

If your concern is truly based on the Swaziland government supposedly planning to kill these wonderful elephants, PETA has already offered to transport them all to another wild area for their safety and freedom. If their lives are honewstly in danger, then you need to take them up on this offer for their best possble welfare.

You represent for Americans AND the world what SHOULD be the highest expectations for animal welfare. If you do nothing else, please at least contact Steve Irwin of Australia's Zoo for advice and consultation on these issues, to see if he can steer you in a direction that will be beneficial to both your zoos and the elephants. I've CC'd him in case he's able to take the initiative and assist you in making these decisions. I've also included all your emails and phone numbers below so you might contact each other for support and to brainstorm for ideas.

For the benefit of the wonderful Mr. Irwin, I include this link to PETA's website focusing on all the information regarding this issue:

Thank you for reading this and I hope you'll make the right choices for the welfare and happiness of one of the most amazing species on Earth.

Sincerely,
