- A government inspection in Japan has found that up to
30% of soy derived 'Organic' products such as tofu contain GM soybeans.
-
- Of the 80 products targeted by government inspectors,
20 tofu and five natto products (a type of fermented soybean popular in
Tokyo) contained gene-modified soybeans.
-
- The farm ministry says it is now making checks on the
offending manufacturers to see if the mislabelling was a product of deliberate
falsification or if the GM beans were used in good faith. Japanese consumers
are only too aware that much GM material finds its way into Japanese food
owing to poor labelling of imported soybeans, said a consumer group spokesman.
