Dear Jeff:

The following commentary appeared in Balochistan Post from the 24th of March. It highlights the hypocrisies of the current US government in its self-centered desire to have the Geneva Convention applied to its POWs, however, they did not care about the Geneva Convention when it came to the Afghan POWs.

Incidentally, Collin Powell referred to the Afghans captured in war as POWs and stated that they will be classified as POWs but Rumsfeld refused and classified them an illegal combatants. Yet, Rumsfeld has no shame to come to the international stage of diplomacy and demand the application of Geneva Convention to the US POWs. What about the Afghans imprisoned in 2 X 2 meters cages for almost two years? What happened to the Geneva Convention then?

Tragically, the Bush administration would say that the Taliban's government was not recognized by the US, and that its soldiers were not wearing proper military uniform, hence, Talib soldiers could not be classified as POWs. If that is the case, then why was the Bush administration negotiating with Taliban in summer of 2001? Moreover, the criminal Northern Alliance allies of the US were not wearing uniforms, either. In fact, the Northern Alliance has been complicit in the massacres of thousands of people. In fact, the US was the one that provided military uniforms to the Northern Alliance.
The US might be powerful militarily, but it lost the battle of morality and of face to the rest of the world.

Iraq Should Treat US Soldiers Like The US Is Treating Afghans

LONDON -- Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain believes that captured US and British troops should be treated as unlawful combatants by the Iraqi army, similar to the manner in which the USA treats those who it illegally holds at Camp Delta, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

After the capture of American troops the US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, citing the Geneva Convention, hypocritically stated, "It's illegal to do things to POWs that are humiliating to those prisoners." This seems rather ironic from an Administration that has humiliated, shackled, gagged and blindfolded some 600 prisoners at Camp Delta while they are detained without trial, charge or legal representation.

Since America and Britain have unilaterally flouted international law and the UN, which Muslims have always viewed as tools of the colonialists, international law and the UN are now redundant, says the news release of Hizb.

In seminars around the UK this weekend, thousands of Muslims have once again reiterated their whole-hearted support for the Jihad of the Iraqi army that is being waged to hold off the invaders. They have also called on the armies of the Muslim world to immediately go to the assistance of the Iraqi army and people so that the invasion can be repelled.

Dr Imran Waheed, a UK based doctor and a representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain, said, International law and the UN have now been discarded in the dustbin of history. The Muslim World must now resolve the issue of Palestine, Kashmir and all other foreign policy issues on a unilateral basis and not on the basis of international law.
