- (AFP) -- A total of 51 people have died from Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in China, while 1,247 cases have been detected,
local health officials said.
-
- The announcement, which represents government statistics
as of Saturday, brings the total global death toll from the mystery virus
to at least 91.
-
- The new numbers were provided at a press conference called
by the health ministry, updating previous government statistics according
to which 47 had died and nearly 1,200 had been infected in China.
-
- Officials said a total of 19 cases of SARS have been
detected in the capital Beijing, which has so far not been considered among
the worst hit areas in China.
-
- The Beijing figure includes Pekka Aro, a Finnish official
with the International Labor Organization who died of SARS early Sunday.
-
- China has detected two cases of foreigners contracting
the disease. Apart from Aro, this also includes an unidentified Canadian,
officials said at the press conference.
