- Two Australian women have been admitted to hospital amid
fears they are the first local cases of the deadly pneumonia-like illness
that has spread from Asia.
-
- No cases have been confirmed in Australia yet, but both
women - one in the Victorian city of Ballarat and the other in Perth -
showed suspicious symptoms after returning from Asia recently.
-
- The illness has so far killed nine people and infected
an estimated 500 people worldwide in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia,
the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.
-
- In a rare emergency warning, the World Health Organisation
declared it "a worldwide health threat", saying cases were being
spread by air travellers.
-
- A 47-year-old Ballarat woman, who returned from a visit
to China on Saturday, was admitted last night with a flu-like illness,
Dr James Hurley said.
