- Dear Jeff ...
-
- Attached are two photographs for your consideration.
-
- Maybe it's just me, but I find this message very disturbing.
It is posted outside an elementary school in Topeka, Kansas and reads,
"FLEXIBILITY - GO WITH THE FLOW"
-
-
-
-
-
- Flexibility - yielding to influence - is not a character
trait appropriate for American children. I am appalled...this message
is appropriate for a political agenda I won't name. Can you guess what
it is?
-
- Now, compare the 'flow' message with the one in this
second photo. This school photograph - promoting the concept of self-determination
- was taken about 1900; the other, sadly, was taken today.

When my mother was in grade school in the early 40s she had to learn Latin
well enough to comprehend the meaning of words strictly by their Latin
roots, had to memorize the Presidents in forward and reverse order, know
all the capitals of all the states and most foreign nations -- in grade
school, mind you! Later in High School she had to learn to speak in public,
to debate, to run a small business and a home efficiently, in addition
to the standard requisite material (and all this while maintaining a respectable
public image). When she divorced in the 60s, a mere high school graduate,
she had what amounted to a college education compared to what is being
dispensed today or even 20 years ago. There is no pursuit of excellence.
There are no more founts of wisdom or knowledge to be tapped, just condensed
formulas for wrote memorization to get the student through the testing
phase and out the other side asap and as painlessly to the system as possible.
And probably hoping they don't show up with a loaded rifle at some point.
Recently a 17 year old relative was visiting. Her father had just finished
bragging that she made straight A's when we all heard her frustration over
at the computer. She couldn't get a music lyric search engine to find Puff
Daddy's song "Real Niggas." After several minutes of struggle
she decided to try an alternate spelling of Daddy. Seems DADY wouldn't
call up a thing. She managed to spell "Niggas" perfectly.
Need I say more? Straight A's!?!? Maybe the 'A' is for Autistic????
