- MEXICO CITY (EFE)
- U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin is scheduled to help launch Mexico's new
"People's Network," an integrated banking system for small depositors
that makes easier for Mexicans living in the United States to send money
home.
-
- Mexican-born Marin and the general manager of Mexico's
National Savings and Financial Services Bank (BANSEFI) are slated to declare
the network open for business at a joint press conference on Monday.
-
- BANSEFI, a government institution devoted to meeting
the needs of small-scale savers, announced that the People's Network would
link savings and loans institutions around the nation using the Internet
and cutting-edge communications technology.
-
- The goal of the system is to provide users of savings
banks and credit unions with services that are as quick and efficient as
those of commercial banks.
-
- The network will enable Mexicans living in rural locations
to receive cash remittances from U.S. relatives, access government aid
and support programs and obtain low-cost home loans and health insurance.
-
- The system boasts some 1,000 service-delivery points
throughout the nation, BANSEFI spokesmen said.
