- TAMPA, Fla. (Reuters) - A
Florida doctor accused of planning to blow up Islamic centers and mosques
is competent to stand trial, a federal judge ruled on Friday.
-
- Robert Goldstein, 37, a podiatrist, was arrested in August
after police and federal agents found several high-powered guns and 20
bombs in his home near St. Petersburg.
-
- They said Goldstein had a list of 50 Islamic centers
and mosques in Florida and a detailed plan for attacking an Islamic school.
Goldstein's attorney said after his arrest he had a history of emotional
problems and the alleged plot was probably a fantasy.
-
- U.S. Magistrate Thomas McCoun ruled that Goldstein was
mentally competent after Goldstein had been examined by a psychiatrist.
No trial date was set.
-
- In September, Samuel Shannahan, a licensed gun dealer,
was arrested and charged with illegally giving Goldstein five weapons.
