- Police have opened fire on Bush protestors with rubber
bullets, pepper spray and gas. The crowds of people are moving around and
regrouping.
-
- The crowd was standing at the barricades and the police
had called a state of emergency. Pepper spray was used on group early on.
Batons were used on some people. Group included babies in strollers and
older people, also people in wheelchairs. Those that could get out of the
way were cut off surronded by police. There are snipers on the roofs.
-
- All protestors were given a phone number to write on
their arm by legal group that would hook them up with legal services if
they are arrested. There are also medic's intersperse in the crowd.
-
- The crowd included union people - longshoremen, anti-war
people, people who see Bush as a corporate lackey who is stealing our retirement.

- Police reaction to Portland protest by Lisa Thomas 7:03pm

-
- This will backfire. Even our most ostrich-like citizens
are not going to stand for rubber bullets being shot in crowds with babies
in strollers. This will hopefully wake people up as to what kind of people
are running our country and how much closer to a police state we are moving.

-
- I was between 5th and 6th on the sidewalk. Maybe the
ones in front were warned to move, but I didn't hear any warning. It had
been a peaceful protest. Suddenly the police came forward spraying pepper
spray. A man nearby with an infant in a backpack got hit real good. The
baby's face was so red I thought it had quit breathing. We pounded on the
door at Carl's Jr. asking for water, but they had locked up. From the other
direction came cop cars through the crowd and rubber bullets were fired
at those closest to the cars. I kept retreating but the cops kept spraying.
Lots of people were sprayed including the camera man from Channel 2 KATU.
Some of us ended up across the street at Standard Insurance and used the
fountain and pool.

-
- Thank you Portland for sending the message loud and clear!
I thought the sheeple of this country too comfortable, too stupid, too
crass to really care about what is happening here. We can never again ask
"How did the German people let it happen?" Wake up - if we do
not take to the streets we are letting it happen here. Even Gore (ol'"I'll
fight for you" Al) ran and hid under a rock...Taking it to the streets
is the only way - there is no other way - hey, Ostrich, do you think writing
your Congressperson is the way to do it? They are owned by someone else,
not by thee and me...The few who are not don't last (think Anita McKinney).
Do you think the ballot is the way? Have you forgotten Florida? They will
only "count" the votes they want to count. The only hope we have
is in the streets...In closing, a historical messsage for you: "Why
of course the people don't want war ... But after all it is the leaders
of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter
to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship,
or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ... Voice or no voice, the
people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy.
All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce
the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."
-Hermann Goering, Nazi leader, at the Nuremberg Trials after World War
II

- Hi Jeff,
-
- Well now, this is getting REAL interesting. Looks like
we have a real mass civil disobedience protest going on here in downtown
Portland. First, the MAX and public transit seems to be moving again, at
least the MAX. However, Broadway Street, the four lane north south drag
in downtown has now been blocked off for almost 10 Blocks. The original
blockage of one block around the Hilton has been expanded to include several
additional blocks of Broadway, the street that fronts the Hilton on the
west side. There are riot police in position at a fence barricade one block
around the Hilton. On the other side of that barricade are dozens if not
hundreds of protesters who aren't going anywhere. This may last all night
as the street closures are scheduled to continue until 9am when the Prez
leaves. Exactly how he will get out with all these protesters around is
somewhat intriguing.
-
- In addition there was an unscheduled, noisy and rowdy
march around 6:30 pm south along Broadway that left a mass of grafitti
scrawled on sidewalks and especially on the Nordstrom store.windows. I
observed this march Jeff and at one point I nearly saw a fight break out
between a protester and a "redneck" driving by. It was a very
interesting scene, especially with the Italian festival right accross the
street. So Jeff, I've been eating Italian Food, listening to Italian opera
being sung and then wandering a block or two away and looking at the riot
police and the protesters staring off at each other. All on a warm August
evening in Portland. Who needs drugs when reality is so unreal.. LOL
-
- Assuming the protesters stay all night, the morning commute
should be real interesting. No violence so far, no smashed windows or anything
and the police presence has been heavy, but kept mostly out of sight. Thank
god the feds aren't handling it or we would have a real riot by now. Anyhoo,
just to let you know the Prez is getting his usual Portland reception although
this time is much more intense than previous ones. There are small groups
of protesters just wandering around yelling also. The main group is massed
at the southern barricade facing the Hilton on Broadway with another smaller
group a block west of them. I'll keep an eye out and email you another
update in a hour or two.

- Hi Jeff,
-
- Just got through reading the article about the Portland,
Oregon protest over Bush's appearance. I have to say this: When a large
group of demonstrators publicizes they'll do whatever it takes to get as
close to Bush as possible, those people bringing their babies to that area
to support the protest are absolute idiots.
-
- The Pacific Northwest is well-known for its volatile
protests - Anarchists, WTO, Mother Jones' magazine voting an Oregon university
number-one for activism, et al.
-
- While I absolutely support constitutionally legal public
action, someone has to ask the obvious question: Who in the hell takes
their young children to a large protest? You have to know there will always
be a few antagonists in the crowd ready and more than willing to start
problems for those legitimate and peaceful protestors. People living in
Oregon know that anyone going to a demonstration of this proportion should
have the common sense not to take their babies and young children to it.

-
- I am a long time reader, but first time writer. Must
be the fall weather that got my 'dander' up! Actually, it was the rubber
bullet/Portland article that finally galvanized me into writing.
-
- Whoever many of these people are in Portland, it sounds
as if they are just as much 'sheeple' as everyone else. (There must be
something in Washington & Oregon water that causes people there to
protest more than everywhere else in the country. LOL Quite likely the
same social attitude that spawned the 'grunge' movement whereby young punks
with little to no life experience made/make a veritable fortune and a life
of fame by bitching about the unfairness of the world in song.) Ever heard
of a stampede?
-
- Lets face it, the primary reason the cops are there is
to prevent things from getting out of hand. If the few imbeciles would
not graffiti things and break stuff, there would be little to no reason
for the police lines! You do it to yourselves much of the time for chrissakes!
-
- And rubber bullets at baby strollers, crikey, can that
statement be any more vomitously liberal propoganda-esque? The so called
'snipers' (ok that IS what they are), are there to SELECTIVELY single out
people who are causing the problems so as NOT to endanger the 'poor babies
and innocent bystanders'.
-
- And by the way, what idiot brings a baby to a protest
when it is widely expected to have a potential showdown?! It is not the
cops fault some moron puts their infant in harms way!
-
- By the way, if you the protester (outnumbering cops by
hundreds to one) feel fear, how do you think those young men & women
in uniforms feel? Don't kid yourself, they know that if the entire protest
group rushed them, they'd have no chance even with real bullets they'd
quickly be overwhelmed. Most of the cops are just normal people with a
different job and are no more responsible for the injustices and deceptions
of the world than you or I. It is those in power of business, politics,
religions, etc that are the ones to blame.
-
- Funny thing is 99% of the protesters are "sunny
day protesters". Few if any will truly lay down their life and liberty
(ok, maybe a quick weekend jail visit that makes for good storytelling
and adventures) for their beliefs. It is always the 'other' guy who has
to make the sacrifice. Most of the folks there are just curious and want
to feel involved, but it is doubtful they even really know what they are
protesting.
-
- It is that 'herd/mob' mentality that causes the masses
to follow blindly a very few agent provocateurs who USUALLY wind up disappearing
when the sh*t hits the fan, leaving the masses to face the consequences,
if any. The few participants that do have an agenda are often the same
rabid protesters that show up over everything that does not smack of pure
socialism.
-
- Incidentally, being a 'leader' of a protest is a great
way to meet the opposite (or same sex-whatever floats yer boat) sex for
sexual reasons, so do not kid yourselves about the integrity of many of
these kids. The vast majority will go the way of their 60's forebearers
who became 'establishment' once they were out of college. They are not
bad kids, but neither are they martyrs. They are just that...excitable,
'know it all' college age young people with a strong sense of idealism.
Nothing wrong with that.
-
- Don't get me wrong, protest is healthy and good (sometimes)
but one must accept the consequences of one's own actions. In one breath
they say they want 'freedom' to do whatever is popular at the moment and
in the next breath they throw aside their own accountability and blame
the police for their discomfort! If you want to be part of the crowd that
"kicks the sleeping dog", don't blame the dog for biting! For
every action there is an equal and opposite reaction...
-
- Hey, I am not denying that much of the conspiracy stuff
is true, of course it is. But just as the US government would have you
believe it is the majority of the world that is 'bad', these protesters
would have you believe it is the 'poor innocents of the world' against
big bad Bush/Blair/villain of the day. Get a grip on reality! Truth is
in middle.
-
- Everyone in power in the world has the same essential
attitude of nepotism and whether they are religious, political or yes,
even protest leaders. What do you think motivates someone to WANT to be
in charge of everyone/everything else? Whether it is the US or China or
the so called Lizard men, SOMEBODY somewhere is going to try and control
the masses. And just as since the dawn of time, they will likely succeed.
-
- The vast majority of people will let it happen. They
are much too interested in Anna Nicole, American Idol and Nelly (or burning
American flags or whatever) to do anything other than march on a weekend.
Oh, they'll bitch over beers about it, but few will truly live the life
they preach. Throughout history it has occurred time and again.
-
- Occasionally, a 'revolution' actually does occur and
that is driven by the 'have nots', wanting what the 'haves' have. 1770s
'patriots' did essentially nothing different than todays palestinain 'terrorists'.
Lots of innocents were killed and homes/schools razed in the name of the
cause. Were Jefferson and company considered patriots by colonial England?
Or would you say they were considered terrorists & treasonous fomenters?
-
- I am not really criticizing the crys of outrage, but
sometimes it is just SO pathetic to listen to rubber bullet at baby bullsh*t!
That kind of vomitous propoganda is nothing different than the propoganda
that passes off as 'news' on CNN. It has the same breathless, dogmatic
ignorance as does Bill Mahr or Bill O'Reilly.
-
- If you are going to bitch, which is honorable enough,
great, but at least be accurate in what is occurring and don't stoop to
the same level as does every other countries/movements propoganda machine(s).
-
- There is power in truth and the ridiculous and unlearned
crap such as the aforementioned 'rubber bullet, baby' stuff is absurd.
-
- Best wishes to all. It is a wonderous time to be alive
since for the first time in history we really have access to many of the
untruths and half truths of the world. THAT is something to be excited
about. They thought the pen was mighty, the internet is something else!

- Stumbled Into The Portland Riot
-
- From 'Pliny' Spacek
- Spacek@ameritech.net
- 8-24-2
-
- Just got back...
-
- I was in Vancouver, WA, arranging to buy some grapes
at harvest for a batch of wine. I was with 3 buddies from Midwest out here
on vacation. We heard about Italian festival and decided to go pig out
on poasta in portland.
-
- We went to this nice little place downtown with sidewalk
tables. I had the butternut squash ravioli with gogonzola and walnut sauce.
Great. And a small, two finger, glass of hearty italian red. My buddies
were likewise sucking down the vast quantities.
-
- We had a great time and were waiting for our ride back
to Oly to come fetch (my buddies wives who had been out to the spa in Washougal
and out buying wools at Pendeltons' discount store), when we heard a great
deal of comotion around the corner and down a couple of blocks. As we needed
to walk off dinner we thought to go check it out.
-
- What a BAD idea.
-
- We did not know that The Great Dictator Bush was in town.
So, big surprise when we walk casually into a riot. I got bashed on the
head with a club and sprayed with so much pepper sheeit that I still smell
it.
-
- One of my buddies (66 years old) nearly lost an eye.
Half his face is swollen up like a basketball from a reaction to the spray,
and then the copshithead smashed him with a club and splits his face open
like a ripe melon. He is pissed to say the least.
-
- I saw infants and small children being sprayed point
blank in the face by police enforcers.
-
- Also there were a lot, and I mean, maybe 40 or more,
plainclothes feds beating and spraying the crowds around the hotel as we
were forced back toward the hilton.
-
- ALL my buddies and their wives are from Iowa. ALL of
them voted for dictator bush.
-
- Now the consensus is that, as one of them said, "
I would not let that scum eat my sh*t."
-
- I think that dictator bush has some real problems coming
when these boys get back home. Two are county party chiefs....Republicans
of course.

- We know better than to ever go downtown Portland when
a Prez comes to give a speech. The police here have been cracking down
(literally) more every year. It's guaranteed to get nasty. The anarchists
in Seattle gave the Portland Police every incentive they needed to get
more brutal.

- While the dispute may be understandable...I do very much
question the logic

in which crowd-control measures
- are liable to be taken. For crying out loud...leave the
children home!

- I've been watching the taped newsfeeds on the web of
this.
- Man, talk about over reaction by TPTB!!!
-
- This is classic.
-
- In one sequence we have heavy armoured storm trooper
types at a barricade across the road. Up comes the crowd all ages/sizes/colours.
They start chanting to the troopers and bamb! pepper spray into the crowd.
Rubber bullets next. Crowd falls back.
-
- A strange thing then happens. The local cops in cars
rush into the gap and seperate the heavies from the crowd. All along in
the film the local Portland cops were really low key...mostly bike cops
and horseback...and they were smiling and waving to the kids!
-
- I think the problem here was the Fed Thugs!
-
- Bush is going to have fun in SoCal!
