- (EFE) - President Vicente Fox phoned Los Angeles Mayor
James Hahn to thank him for agreeing to accept ID cards issued by Mexican
consulates so that both legal and illegal immigrants can have greater access
to city services.
-
- Officials in Los Angeles agreed May 14 to accept identification
documents issued by Mexican consulates, a measure the Mexican government
said would benefit millions of illegal immigrants in the city.
-
- Mexicans living in Los Angeles who possess such documents
will now be able to open electricity and water accounts, use public libraries,
report crimes to the police and participate in city council meetings.
-
- "This is due to Mayor Hahn's positive attitude.
He always supported the measure and the Mexican government's efforts to
assist citizens residing in this city, which has the highest concentration
of Mexican-born residents in the United States," the Mexican presidential
office said Tuesday.
-
- Officials noted that anyone who can prove Mexican citizenship
has the right to obtain the identification at any Mexican diplomatic legation
in the United States.
-
- The California cities of San Francisco and Oakland, as
well as police agencies in the states of Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and
North Dakota currently accept identification issued by Mexican consulates.
