From William Bandy

Number of physicians in the US - 700,000
Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year - 120,000
Accidental deaths per physician - 0.171
(US Dept. of Health & Human Services)

Number of gun owners in the US - 80,000,000
Number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) - 1,500
Accidental deaths per gun owner - 0.0000188

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

FACT: Not everyone has a gun, but everyone has at least one doctor.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets out of hand. As a Public Health Measure, I have withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear that the shock could cause people to seek medical aid.

Death Rate for Black Males Ages 15-19: 67.9 deaths per 100,000 population (1999)

Firearm Suicide Deaths: 7.6 per 100,000 population (1999)

How are the stats for accidental deaths caused by physicians determined? It seems that these stats (firearm deaths) would be much more cut and dry and easier to determine. And are these stats strictly based on deaths caused by physicians or any hospital staff? I doubt that these comparisons take into account the exposure difference between the two. It seems obvious that more people have been exposed more regularly to the healthcare system than to firearms.

I'm not complaining about the site or the concept behind it. In fact, I'm a huge fan and read every day. I've found it to be one of the only sources for unfiltered news around. However, bland generalizations such as these and using oversimplified statistics on very complex issues doesn't lend any credibility to the article.

Thanks,
