Elephants are trampling villages in Zambia after fleeing poachers and official culls in Zimbabwe.

The elephants have been crossing the Zambezi River and marauding through villages near the Victoria Falls.

Isaac Longwe, the chief warden for the Zambia Wildlife Authority, said the situation is growing worse: "Elephants are terrorising villagers in the Gwembe Valley and we have since dispatched one hunter and two supporting wildlife scouts."

The elephants have damaged fields and property and ransacked grain stores according to the South African Press Association.

Villager Stanard Halenga said thousands of people had abandoned their homes and said many were on the verge of killing the elephants themselves.
