Dot-Name For People

OTTAWA, Canada (CNW) - People around the globe are now pre- registering their name on the net in the "landrush" phase of the world's newest Internet domain registry.

Internic.ca's sister company, Namescout.com, was accredited in October as the world's first .name registrar. Both are now accepting pre-registrations from individuals who wish to "put their name on the net". The first batch of registrations is to be processed in a matter of weeks, with the first pre- registered .name domains usable on the Internet when they resolve around January 15.

"One of the best new things on the net in the New Year is going to be dot-name" said Rob Hall, President of Internic.ca. "Until now, people have had little choice but to compete with businesses and governments and other organizations for dot-com, dot-biz and other Internet names. Over 40 million people and organizations around the world have registered domain addresses of one sort or another, and that number is growing rapidly as Internet use continues to explode. But dot-name is different - it is the first domain and e-mail address designed exclusively for individuals."

Moreover, with .name registrations, people gain an e-mail address that they can forward to whatever work or home address they wish. "Think of it - an e-mail address you can use for life, and which is as easy for friends and family to remember as your name," said Hall.

Pre-registrations for .name are now available online at www.internic.ca.

Internic.ca and Namescout.com have been at the forefront of Internet development since the earliest days. Namescout.com was recently accredited as the world's first registrar for the brand-new dot-name domain, and has just been provisionally accredited by the Australian Domain Authority (auDA) as one of Australia's first wave of new dot-au registrars. Internic.ca was Canada's first dot-ca accredited registrar and is now Canada's leading dot-ca registrar.

President and CEO Rob Hall was a leader in the two-year process of creating Canada's new Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), and served as CIRA's founding Chair. Internic.ca and Namescout.com are owned by Momentous.ca of Ottawa, Canada, and serve customers around the globe from offices in North America, Australia and the Caribbean. Today, they are the world's only registrar group simultaneously accredited by ICANN, CIRA, auDA and the Global Name Registry.
