- WASHINGTON (Reuters) -
President
Bush rejected a subpoena from Congress for Justice Department documents
sought in a Clinton era campaign fund-raising probe, asserting presidential
executive privilege to keep prosecutors' records secret.
-
- "Because I believe that congressional access to
these documents would be contrary to the national interest, I have decided
to assert executive privilege with respect to the documents and to instruct
you not to release them or otherwise make them available to the
committee,"
Bush said in a memo to Attorney General John Ashcroft, released on
Thursday.
-
- He said disclosing prosecutors' decision-making documents
would threaten to "politicize the criminal justice
process."
-
- Bush acted in response to a congressional subpoena in
a long-standing probe of Democratic fund-raising practices related to the
1996 presidential election. The subpoena requested a memo from the chief
of the Justice Department's campaign finance task force to former Attorney
General Janet Reno, and other documents.
