- ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Taliban
fighters shot down a U.S. warplane near their last stronghold of Kandahar
on Saturday, the former Taliban ambassador to Pakistan was quoted as
saying.
-
- "The Taliban shot down an American jet this
afternoon
during the heavy U.S. bombardment of Kandahar airport," the Afghan
Islamic Press (AIP) quoted Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, former Taliban
ambassador
to Pakistan, as saying.
-
- "The plane fell almost two km south of the airport
and American planes kept on bombing (the airport)," he said.
-
- Zaeef said the Taliban had no information about the fate
of the pilots of the downed aircraft, but they were presumed to have been
killed "by the U.S. bombing".
-
- Witnesses said U.S. warplanes had unleashed a withering
bombardment of Taliban targets around Kandahar on Saturday as tribal
fighters
and U.S. Marines dug in within striking distance of the fundamentalist
militia's final stronghold.
