America's unemployment rate soared to 5.4 percent in October, up 0.5 of a percent - the biggest monthly rise since 1980. President Bush says the figures show the terrorist attacks damaged the economy. 'Not only has it shattered the lives of those who've lost life, the attacks have threatened the livelihoods of American workers.' Over 400,000 jobs were lost during the month mainly in manufacturing, airlines, travel agencies, hotels, and retailing.
