- United States President George W. Bush has blamed the
terrorist attacks of September-the-11th for the biggest monthly jump in
the jobless rate in 21 years. The sharp rise is further evidencethe US
economy has fallen into recession.
-
- America's unemployment rate soared to 5.4 percent in
October, up 0.5 of a percent - the biggest monthly rise since 1980. President
Bush says the figures show the terrorist attacks damaged the economy. 'Not
only has it shattered the lives of those who've lost life, the attacks
have threatened the livelihoods of American workers.' Over 400,000 jobs
were lost during the month mainly in manufacturing, airlines, travel agencies,
hotels, and retailing. Many economists believe companies are in a survival
mode and they fear continued economic fallout as a result of the new worries
about anthrax in the mail.
