- BEIJING: Chinese President
Jiang Zemin Wednesday said that Afghan people should be given the right
to self-determination for establishment of future government in their country.
-
- "The solution of the Afghanistan issue should be
based on a set of principles, which includes ensuring Afghanistan's sovereignty,
independence and territorial integrity, allowing the Afghan people themselves
to make decisions on solving their problem," Jiang told French President
Jacques Chirac during a telephone conversation Tuesday night. A spokesman
of the Foreign Ministry told that the two sides exchanged views on the
issue of Afghanistan.
-
- Jiang, who has talked to Chirac twice earlier this month,
also stressed that Afghanistan's future government should have a 'broad
basis', which can represent interests of all nationalities, and get along
well with other nations, especially the neighbouring. Such a step, he said,
would be conducive to safeguarding regional peace and stability.
