Teachers Punched, Kicked
And Bitten By Students Under Five
The Mirror - London
9-21-1

Teachers are regularly being attacked by violent pupils as young as three, a report revealed yesterday.

More than 80 per cent of teachers across 13 education authorities said pupil behaviour was worsening.

One primary school teacher in her 30s had her lip split open when she was "headbutted" by a child of five.

Another also in her 30s said: "I have been kicked, punched and bitten on a regular weekly basis by a pupil in my class."

Primary school pupils often have to be restrained from injuring other children. One teacher told how a young pupil stabbed another with a pencil leaving a one-inch gash through a jumper and shirt.

The child was sent to the headteacher but was sent back to the classroom within five minutes and the teacher involved refused to continue working unless the child was excluded for the rest of the day.

The survey by the University of Warwick's Institute of Education sparked calls for the Government and education authorities to take a tougher stance on violent children in schools.

National Union of Teachers general secretary Doug McEvoy said: "It is not exactly a blackboard jungle out there but problems are widespread. This report shows unacceptable pupil behaviour is across all schools not just secondary as one might expect."

Some older pupils were said to have been caught with scissors and knives while primary pupils used pencils, or in one case a sharp pointed stick, as weapons.

Mr McEvoy said: "Whether the child under five understands what he or she is doing, we don't know.

"But it is happening now and it didn't happen years ago."

He partly blamed TV violence and poor parenting for the rise in aggression in younger children.

He called for a "rigorous" policy on exclusions (expulsions) - even if it required more special schools to deal with troublesome pupils.

Excluding more pupils, he claimed, would benefit teacher recruitment in the long-term.
