MEXICO CITY - More and more Mexican nationals plan to leave here out of fear of future terror strikes and as uncertainty looms regarding a likely U.S. military response, El Universal daily reported Thursday.

More than 100 Mexicans living in New York have filed for passports to ease their return to Mexico, Consul Salvador Beltran said. They have done so mainly out of fear following the attacks, but also because of expectations of a U.S. immigration clampdown.

Arab extremists, some of whom were believed to have entered the United States illegally, are blamed with hijacking commercial jetliners and ramming them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Now all immigrants are coming under pressure.

About 80 percent of the 1 million Mexicans who non-governmental groups say live in New York do so illegally and lack Mexican passports not to mention U.S. visas. Many are able to work by using falsified or borrowed Social Security cards.

But if they were to be wounded in a future attack, they wouldn't be eligible for medical care or social security benefits that those with documents would receive. Mexicans also may be wanting to leave the Empire State because they are afraid a draft will be raised in the wake of the bombings and as the U.S. administration of President George W. Bush says it readies for ground combat.

During the Vietnam War, many Mexican citizens in the United States feared facing conscription. Now many Mexicans wonder whether Mexico, which is nowhere near being a terrorist target, could be safer than the United States and are trying to get home.

Some 17 Mexicans are thought to have perished in the attack on the famous twin towers in southern Manhattan's Financial District.

Undocumented Mexicans also are looking to return home because of heightened unemployment as many companies are laying off workers. They often lack supporting documentation that could help them become eligible for government assistance following the terrorist attacks.
